In its propaganda piece, Homosexual Civil Unions, the TVC obfuscates once again to frighten its gullible readers into thinking the civil marriage and civil union are the same thing. It boldly proclaims, "Homosexual activists are openly strategizing on how to gain all of the legal benefits of marriage under state-passed “civil union” legislation." And then the TVC goes on to misrepresent an article about what has taken place in California written by a very conservative law professor.

In his article, The California Model: Spousal Rights by Increments, Dale Carpenter contrasts the development of civil rights legislation in California with several other states, Hawaii (1993), Vermont (1999), and Massachusetts (2003). Carpenter advocates a slow conservative pace and contrasts it to the quicker pace of other states. Clearly Carpenter does not share Martin Luther King's opinion about who benefits from delay in civil rights legislation.

And then in a charactistic bout of fear mongering, the TVC makes a number of outrageous claims. "Homosexual activists ask how same-sex marriage will affect traditional marriage. The answer is that that homosexual activists have openly stated that they are pushing for legalization of same-sex marriage as a way of destroying the institution of marriage altogether." They go on to take some words from a Michaelangelo Signorile article out of context, words that were actually quotes from a source Signorile considered radical.

Another of their outrageous claims reads, "In fact, homosexuals also have no intention of remaining monogamous." They support this with another out-of-context quote of Andrew Sullivan. Naturally, they ignore the context of his thinking.

And then TVC states, "We can only support a constitutional amendment that fully protects marriage with no civil unions or any other legal arrangement that allow homosexuals or transgendered couples to marry."

And that claim leads to a few questions.

How is civil marriage 'protected' by passing a constitutional amendment that does nothing but prevent some people from getting married?

What would such an amendment do to protect children from physically and/or sexually abusive mothers and fathers?

What would it do to protect children from poverty and all of its resultant problems?

What would it do to ensure a good education for children?

What does it do for children whose access to health care will be cut off by the amendment?

What does the marriage ban do to prevent 'one man and one woman' from divorcing and remarrying (which, BTW, is forbidden by your alleged Christian belief system?

Obviously the Traditional Values Coalition is populated by hypocritical liars, the kind of hypocritical liars the Christian belief system warns us about.

and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a 'more convenient

"All that is said here grows out of a tragic misconception of time," she

said, quoting King again. "It is the strangely irrational notion that there

is something in the very flow of time that will inevitably cure all ills.

Actually, time is neutral.

"It can be used either destructively or constructively. I am coming to

feel that the people of ill will have used time much more effectively than

the people of good will. We will have to repent in this generation not merely

for the vitriolic words and actions of the bad people, but for the appalling

silence of the good people."

"But the conservatives are wrong when it comes to gay men as well. Gay men--not because they're gay but because they are men in an all-male subculture--are almost certainly more sexually active with more partners than most straight men. (Straight men would be far more promiscuous, I think, if they could get away with it the way gay guys can.) Many gay men value this sexual freedom more than the stresses and strains of monogamous marriage (and I don't blame them). But this is not true of all gay men. ... renunciation of sexual freedom in an all-male world can be an even greater statement of commitment than among straights."

Luke 16:18 - "Every one who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery."

Mark 10:11-12 - "And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife and marry another, committeth adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery."

1 Timothy 4:1-5 - "The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer."
